Becoming familiar rarely happens in an instant but rather via a series of moments, touchpoints, and gradual experiences. This journey from stranger to familiar is what we call brand awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this article, we&#8217;ll explain everything you need to know about brand awareness and how you can boost it for your own brand. For example, spotting the Apple symbol on a metallic laptop and instantly knowing it&#8217;s an Apple product.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Brand recall,<\/strong> defined by Keller as &#8220;consumers&#8217; ability to retrieve the brand from memory when given the product category, the needs fulfilled by the category, or a purchase or usage situation as a cue&#8221;. There are two types of brand recall:<br \/>Aided: with the help of prompts or cues<br \/>Unaided: when people can recall the brand without the help of prompts or cues<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Level 4 \u2013 Top of the mind:<\/strong> &nbsp;The higher level of brand awareness, where the brand is the first one that comes to the consumer&#8217;s mind when thinking about a particular product category or need.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Main theoretical models and frameworks involving brand awareness<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the Brand Awareness Pyramid presented in the previous section, several academic models and frameworks demonstrate the importance of brand awareness in branding. Let&#8217;s review the main ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dimensions of Brand Knowledge Model (1993) \u2013 by Kevin Lane Keller<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>One of my favorite frameworks for understanding the concept of brand awareness and its relationship to other branding elements, such as brand knowledge and brand image, is Keller&#8217;s Dimensions of Brand Knowledge Model<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"#_ftn3\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">[3]<\/a>, published in 1993. One of the five components is brand awareness:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Brand Loyalty: <\/strong>The attachment and commitment the consumer has towards the brand.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Brand Awareness:<\/strong> The consumer&#8217;s ability to recognize and recall the brand.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Perceived Quality: <\/strong>The consumer&#8217;s judgment about the brand&#8217;s overall quality or superiority.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Brand Associations: <\/strong>The thoughts, feelings, and images the consumer associates with the brand.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Other Proprietary Assets: <\/strong>Such as patents, trademarks, and channel or trading partner relationships.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Substantial brand equity can lead to competitive advantage, premium pricing, and greater customer loyalty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Additional frameworks<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Brand awareness is such an essential part of branding that it&#8217;s, of course, part of many other frameworks and models. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebrandingjournal.com\/2021\/02\/brand-equity\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"5864\">Keller&#8217;s Customer-Based Brand Equity Framework<\/a> (as part of the brand salience foundation) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/sync.appfluence.com\/templates\/brand-awareness-matrix\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Brand Awareness Matrix<\/a>, among many others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Brand awareness vs. top-of-mind vs. brand salience<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Brand awareness is often confused with other terms, such as brand salience or top-of-mind awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what&#8217;s the main difference between these terms?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Brand awareness <\/strong>refers to the level of familiarity people have with a particular brand and the degree to which they can recognize or recall it in any given context.<br \/>Example:&nbsp;If you ask, &#8220;Have you heard of Brand X?&#8221; and someone says yes, that&#8217;s brand awareness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Top-of-Mind <\/strong>is the highest degree of brand awareness, where the brand is the first one that comes to a consumer&#8217;s mind when thinking about a particular product category or need.<br \/>Example: If you ask someone, &#8220;What&#8217;s the first brand you think of for hiking gear?&#8221; and they respond &#8220;Patagonia,&#8221; then Patagonia has achieved top-of-mind status for this person in that product category.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Brand salience<\/strong> is &#8216;the capacity of the brand to be evoked spontaneously in consumers&#8217; minds, as soon as the need to buy the product type appears&#8217; <a href=\"#_ftn5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">[5]<\/a>. It&#8217;s similar to brand awareness but more relevant for companies, as it occurs during purchasing situations.<br \/>Example:\u00a0When someone thinks of buying second-hand clothes online and immediately thinks of going to ThreadUp, that&#8217;s brand salience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, brand awareness is about being generally known, while brand salience is about being the first brand that comes to mind when purchasing or needing the product or service. Brand salience is not just about brand familiarity but also how people perceive the brand (brand image and associations).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A brand can have high awareness but low salience if it is not the first brand that comes to mind when consumers consider a purchase. Conversely, a brand can have low awareness but high salience if it is the dominant brand in a particular category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, brand salience is considered more relevant than general brand awareness, as it reflects the brand&#8217;s competitive position and its ability to influence purchasing decisions.
